Obituary for James Tillett

James Leon Tillett, age 87, passed away on Friday, May 18, 2018 in Ogden, Utah.

Leon was the head of the Soil Conservation Service of Nodaway County from 1967 to 1987.

In 1968 he designed the Mozingo Watershed Project. The proposal met with such opposition that the building of Mozingo Lake was tabled for over 20 years.

Two years after his retirement and the drought of 1989, the city of Maryville asked Leon to serve as the Liason between the city and the SCS Office in the building of Mozingo Lake - Thus, after over 20 years, Leon’s dream became a reality.

Leon was very involved in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts and served on the Pony Express Commission for many years. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints he held many positions in the church and he and his wife, Ruth, served as missionaries for 18 months in Dutch-speaking Suriname, South America.

After returning from their mission, Leon and Ruth began Berry Ridge Farm. They raised asparagus and produced jams and syrups that were sold statewide by many FFA units for their fund-raising projects.

Since his youth, the FFA program was dear to Leon’s heart. Straight out of college, he taught math and Vocational Agriculture, thus being a substitute teacher and working with the FFA brought him full circle in his retirement years.

He is survived by his 2nd wife, Terry; seven children, Gloria Greene, Roxanna Cluff, Mary Jo McAdams, Andrea Woods, James Leon Tillett, Jr., Lyle S. Tillett, Paula Hohnstein; three brothers; twenty-three grandchildren; forty-three great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, May 26th at 10:30am at White Oak Cemetery, Pickering, Missouri under the direction of Price Funeral Home, Maryville, Missouri.
